High School Financial Scholarship

Dakota Credit Unions' High School Financial Scholarship 2017

Credit Union Association of the Dakotas will award ten $500 scholarships to Applicants that exemplify the credit union philosophy of "people helping people" through volunteering, community service, and leadership. Five scholarships will be awarded to North Dakota high school graduates and five to South Dakota High School graduates. Scholarships will be awarded upon the successful completion of the first semester of college.

CUNA Awards
Dora Maxwell Awards
Dora Maxwell was an early credit union pioneer. One of the original signers of CUNA's constitution at Estes Park, Colorado, she worked as an organizer for the movement's trade association (then called the Credit Union National Extension Bureau) and held numerous volunteer positions at the local and national level. In addition to organizing hundreds of credit unions, she developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked with organizations on behalf of the poor.
Purpose: to promote social responsibility among credit unions by formally recognizing their community service achievements.

Louise Herring Awards
Louise Herring was an active supporter, organizer, and champion of credit unions. She was the Ohio delegate to the 1934 national credit union conference in Estes Park, Colorado, where she signed the original constitution for a national credit union association. Louise Herring believed that credit unions should work in a practical manner to better people's lives. She saw the credit union as more than just a financial institution. In her own words "The purpose of the credit union is to reform the financial system, so that everyone can have his place in the sun."
Purpose: To promote credit union philosophy by formally recognizing credit unions that demonstrate in an extraordinary way the practical application of that philosophy for their members.


Desjardins Youth and Adult Financial Education Awards

Alphonse Desjardins was a credit union pioneer who was instrumental in forming the Canadian and U.S. credit union movements. Besides helping to found the credit unions in Canada and the U.S., Desjardins pioneered youth savings clubs and in-school "banks," known as caisses scolaires.
Purpose: to formally recognize the leadership of individual credit unions and chapters (or groups of credit unions) on behalf of youth and adult financial education.

Hall of Fame

Eligibility
Any person who has given paid or volunteer service to the credit union movement is eligible. Association and committee chairs and presidents/CEOs are eligible. Persons who were candidates in the past are eligible for renomination. Employees of the Association and MASC are not eligible to participate in this program while employed by CUAD/MASC. 

Recognition

Induction into the Hall of Fame will take place at the Annual Summit with inductees being announced prior to the convention. Inductees will receive an award in their honor. Each inductee's name will be displayed on the Credit Union Hall of Fame wall, located in the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas office.

Five Star Award

The Five Star Award recognizes an individual credit union for its outstanding achievements for the year in Education, Legislative Activities, Public Relations, Member Contact, and Community Service.
The award provides formal recognition of the credit union accomplishments; recognizes credit union excellence; and honors the credit union for increasing public awareness of credit unions.

The credit union with the most points out of the summary for all categories will receive the Five Star Award.

Professional of the Year

The Credit Union Professional of the Year Award recognizes a credit union professional from each North Dakota and South Dakota that deserves recognition for their contribution to advance the credit union movement in their state and the nation. Winners of this award will be recognized for their efforts to help craft an environment that allows credit unions to grow and prosper in order to better serve their members.

Volunteer of the Year

The Credit Union Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a credit union volunteer from each North Dakota and South Dakota that has selflessly contributed time, effort, and talent to the development of the credit union movement in their state. Volunteers are an integral part of the credit union movement and their contributions deserve recognition. Their contributions resonate throughout the credit union community by illuminating the most important part of the credit union structure.

The Emerging Leader of the Year Award recognizes a credit union employee that has shown proven dedication and enthusiasm for the credit union movement. This award is for employees building a career in the industry, executing the credit union mission and guiding the mission in new directions that enhance the overall vision of the organization.

Marketing and Communication Award

The Marketing and Communication Award recognizes a marketing communications piece or project that was used over the past year and proved to be a successful investment. One award will be presented within each asset category. This award category is all-encompassing and is used to recognize any marketing and communications piece(s). Entries could include, but are not limited to: Radio, TV, Print, or online advertising, social media campaigns, websites, newsletters, or a specific marketing plan targeted towards membership (or potential membership) demographic.

Scholarships
William O. Knight, Jr., Memorial Scholarship

The William O. Knight, Jr., Memorial Scholarship was established in 1964 in honor of William Knight, former managing director of the South Dakota Credit Union League. The purpose is to promote education in relationship to credit unions among credit union members and personnel. The scholarship provides for the registration fee for eligible applicants to attend CUNA Management School. This scholarship will not be available until 2020.

Arnold C. Paulson Scholarship


The Arnold C. Paulson Scholarship is available to all member credit union volunteers and professionals throughout the Dakotas. Contributions to the scholarship fund are not a prerequisite for application. Persons who were candidates in the past are eligible for re-nomination. Individuals who received this award within the past five years and employees of the Association & MASC are not eligible to participate. The $250 scholarship will help to defer costs associated with the Summit. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving individual at the 2017 Credit Union Association of the Dakotas Annual Summit, April 10-12, 2017 in Deadwood, South Dakota.
